DAY 8: The Power of Music

day 8 the power of music

Ok, this one is supposed to be a fun post about how music surrounds my life, even without my ability to play musical instruments or sing.

I used to play the same song over and over again for an entire day. It could be a different song each day, either Ruppina’s Faith, Maki Otsuki’s Run! Run! Run!, or The Rootless’ One Day. Notice that it’s all One Piece‘s soundtracks? YES IT WAS. I don’t remember what hit me back then, but what I remember is the feeling of having such confidence and strength to do all those Math and English tasks my teacher gave me.

Then time went by and I was OBSESSED with Freddie Highmore in Arthur 3 (2010). Not that I remember the plot or any scenes from that movie, but I do remember being excited to watch his other films. That’s how I found The Art of Getting By—don’t ask me where I watched it—and fell in love with three of the soundtracks, they’re Sleep The Clock Around, Spitting Fire, and The Trial Of The Century. Well, this story is so specific that I’m getting too excited telling it, but I just couldn’t care less, these are diamonds.

Around the same year, I watched Steve Jobs (2015) and there was this very specific scene that gave me literal goosebumps for, maybe, the first time in my life watching a film. It’s the scene where Steve wanted to put a thousand songs in his daughter’s pocket and Grew Up At Midnight plays. No wonder this song hit 107 plays last month because I just figured out it was available on Spotify this July (been waiting for it since 2018 tho).

(YOOOOOOO, this might sound excessive if you don’t know me, but I literally BAWLED my eyes out again watching this scene, “AWESOME” isn’t even enough to explain the build-up. See? That’s the power of music!)

I almost forgot to get to the point. So, I googled the genre of these songs, and I found out the term “Alternative/Indie”. Since then, as some of you maybe know, my music taste revolves around Indie, Indie folk, Alternative, Indie pop, Indie rock, Soft pop, Singer-Songwriter, Pop, Metal, Alternative Metal, K-Pop, Reggaeton (this one’s too far), you name it. And the rest is history.

Let’s get back to the topic before I go too far and bore you too much with this TMI-ness. Growing up, the power of music for me has expanded, from filling up my energy to helping me collect new friends. I built this group with 4 lovely girls in 2019, when I attended Greyson Chance’s show in Jakarta. Even now, I’m still chatting with one of them, and if everything goes on as planned, I’ll attend a BTS concert this December with the two of them! Yep, I listen to K-BTS now (I mean, not K-pop).

In 2023 (and 2024), I went abroad alone for the first time to meet my favorite musician and get to hug him like an older brother in a country where I knew no one else but him (and some of his teammates, who are very warm and welcoming!).

Later in 2024, with the help of some of his fans who became my friends, I organized a birthday project for him. It was a video project, with a video call with him as the cherry on top. There were around 20ish people in the video call, but little did they know, it felt like an entire world conference to me, because I hosted it and I was SO NERVOUS that I nearly melted in the Jakarta heat.

If that’s not because of the power of music, I don’t know what else to tell you. Let’s just stop here and close this tab.

Last year, I became an accidental designer and event organizer for Greyson Chance’s The Gold Tour in Jakarta. That picture you see in the hero image above, the hand banner Greyson is holding and that poster the girl in front is holding, were made by yours truly. The girls around it was the cute lil team that was built a few weeks before the event. I was really happy with how effectively everything went…although I didn’t get Greyson to sign my album collection.

I’m kinda glad that I studied journalism and was able to polish my writing skills, to the point where I could confidently offer to write for this music blog called Creative Disc, which I always rely on when I wanna put my fangirl-journalist mask. I can write any music releases however I want without any pressure. And now, you can see how the power of music can turn me, someone who can’t play any music instruments (except the drums, and even that’s with the bare minimum ability to fill in), into someone who happily contributes to music in her own way.

Now, it’s almost 4:30 am. Let me go to sleep for a min, cuz tomorrow I gotta write coverage of Novo Amor ft. Yvette Young’s black33. Stream it now here, y’allllll!
